It always tastes like candy when bands describe their own sound without prejudice or excesses, and in the case of Winterburn from Wales, the description could not be more precise than the one that is written on their MySpace page. Roughly, they’re stating that they play thrash-metal as if the 90’s had never existed.
Well, judging by their promo shots I’d say that they’re old-schoolers, the type of guys that probably had a hard-on when they first heard the announcement of a tour with Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth and Metallica throughout Europe, who didn’t right? The band even gives some instructions for anyone willing to attend one of their gigs and stage-dive, and that’s old-school my friends.
It’s exactly a tribute to that glorious decade of the thrash-metal movement led by names like Metallica, Megadeth, Testament and Anthrax that Winterburn offers us with their debut demo. So don’t expect anything innovative or revolutionary here, the band follows the rules of old-school thrash-metal by the book. These three themes were essentially composed to be played live as they carry out plenty of straightforward and aggressive riffs that incite a lot of movement and disorder in a live arena. Vocalist Aaron for the most part adopts a rough and guttural approach, yet on some occasions he goes for a more screamed and nasal tone, the end result isn’t that far removed from a duet between a Chuck Billy and Steve Souza and totally fits the retro backbone that the remaining band provides.
Now the most important question that remains to be answered is whether Winterburn stand out from the countless bands that reside in in a musical scene that is rapidly reaching a point of saturation. To answer the question promptly no, more likely Winterburn will remain unnoticed by the large majority of fans of the style, mostly because just like all the other thrash-metal bands that I’ve been hearing recently the only feelings that arouses in me is nostalgia and a desire to spin those eternal discs of Anthrax and Metallica once again. Sabe sempre a rebuçado quando as bandas conseguem descrever o seu som sem preconceitos ou exageros, e no caso destes Winterburn oriundos do Pais de Gales, a descrição não podia ser mais exacta do que aquela que está escrita na sua página do MySpace, por miúdos a banda descreve que toca um thrash-metal como se os anos 90 nunca tivessem existido.
A julgar pelas fotos de promoção eu diria que são do tipo de gajos que tiveram uma erecção quando ouviram pela primeira vez o anuncio da tournée conjunta com os Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth and Metallica, bem quem não teve certo? O grupo chega ao ponto de colocar alguma instruções de como presenciar um concerto deles e fazer stage-diving, e meus amigos isso é old-school.
É exactamente uma homenagem à década áurea do thrash-metal liderada por nomes como Metallica, Megadeth, Testament e Anthrax que os Winterburn nos oferecem nesta demo de apresentação. Portanto não esperem nada de inovador ou revolucionário, o grupo segue as regras do estilo na sua vertente mais old-school à risca. Estes três temas foram essencialmente construídos para serem tocados ao vivo com riffs directos e agressivos que incitam ao mosh e ao headbanging.
A voz de Aaron ora adopta uma abordagem mais gutural ora mais gritada e nasalada, como se tratasse de um dueto entre um Chuck Billy e um Steve Souza e assenta como uma luva na estrutura mais retro que a restante banda providencia.
Agora a questão mais importante que se coloca aqui é se os Winterburn destacam-se das demais bandas que abundam numa cena musical que está rapidamente a chegar ao seu ponto de saturação, e respondendo à questão muito sucintamente não, o mais provável de acontecer é os Winterburn passarem despercebidos de uma larga maioria de fãs do estilo, pois tal como todas as outras que tenho ouvido ultimamente os únicos sentimentos que despertam me em mim é a nostalgia e a vontade de por aqueles eternos discos dos Metallica e Anthrax novamente a tocar. In every record of Mouth of the Architect it is possible to witness a new change of formation and this new EP “The Violence Beneath” presents us a group in a period of transformation following the abandon of guitarist and vocalist Alex Vernon, which was replaced internally with bassist Kevin Schindel switching over to guitar. However, regardless of the musicians behind the instruments, the music of the Ohio’s group never suffered any setbacks and was always punctuated by an enviable quality. This new work is no exception and although “The Violence Beneath” only includes two new songs, it’s perfectly noticeable that the quintet not only is crossing a period of transition in their line-up but also in their musical orientation. This judging by the opening theme that gives title to this EP, where we see the band going for a faster and heavier rhythm and where the sludgy guitars of Steve Brooks and Kevin Schindel are loaded of contagious harmonies that give the song a certain immediacy, in a style not too far removed from a heavier Mastodon or Baroness.
If this is the musical route that the group is heading towards in the future then the journey is going to be grand without any doubts.
The other unreleased track “Buried Hopes” follows a line more faithful to that the band has done in their past works with a more lingering and desolating rhythm, yet also introduces a few novelties to their sonority like in its first moments which has a somewhat folkish ambient with prog-driven acoustic guitars blended with clean vocals. The EP is completed with the song “Restore” recorded on live and a version of “In Your Eyes” an original of Peter Gabriel, who suffers a brilliant transmutation from the group here.
Bring on the new full-length then, which judging by what we listen in “The Violence Beneath” is going to be absolutely enthralling. (8/10)

Em cada disco dos Mouth of the Architect é possível assistir a uma nova mudança de formação e este novo EP “The Violence Beneath” apresenta-nos um grupo em fase de mudança após o abandono do guitarrista e vocalista Alex Vernon, o qual foi substituído internamente passando o baixista Kevin Schindel a sua assumir as suas funções. No entanto, independentemente dos músicos atrás dos instrumentos a música do grupo oriundo do estado de Ohio nunca sofreu qualquer revés e sempre primou por uma invejável qualidade.
Este novo trabalho não é excepção, e apesar de “The Violence Beneath” incluir somente duas músicas novas, é perfeitamente audível que os Mouth of the Architect atravessam um período de transição não só a nível de formação mas também num plano de orientação musical. Isto a julgar pelo tema de abertura que dá titulo a este EP, aonde assistimos a uma abordagem a ritmos mais rápidos e pesados e aonde as guitarras sujas de Steve Brooks e Kevin Schindel estão carregadas de harmonias contagiantes que conferem ao tema um certo imediatismo, assim ao estilo de uns Mastodon ou Baroness mais agressivos. Se este é o caminho musical que o grupo vai percorrer no futuro então a jornada vai ser grandiosa sem margens para dúvidas.
O outro tema inédito “Buried Hopes” segue uma linha mais fiel àquela que foi palmilhada pelo quinteto em trabalhos anteriores num ritmo mais arrastado e desolador, embora apresente também algumas novidades como é o caso do seu início num ambiente algo folk com guitarras acústicas e vozes limpas à mistura.
O EP completa-se com o tema “Restore” tocado ao vivo e uma versão de “In Your Eyes” um original de Peter Gabriel, que aqui sofre uma transmutação genial por parte do grupo.
Venha então o novo álbum de originais, que a julgar pelo o que se ouve em “The Violence Beneath” vai ser arrebatador. (8/10)
